Goldilocks and the Teen years: A common question posed as frustrations that I hear comes from Moms of Tweens and Teens.Goldilocks and the Teen Years

Over the years, one of the most common questions posed as frustrations that I hear comes from Moms of Tweens and Teens. Particularly form Moms of boys; i.e. young men.

Their frustration has to do with the fact that up until recently, their kids were happy, compliant and eager to please. And then, one day they weren’t. They were discontent, unmotivated and generally frustrated.

Of course, this can do with being a teen and hormone changes, the need for regular sleep, clean food and good water. But, it also has to do with their desire to be challenged, to wrestle with someone bigger and smarter than them. As kids grow and develop they need a challenge- they are testing their ability, checking where they need to grow and develop. They need to get out of the house more, have more responsibilities- some that they fail at so that they can tap into their own internal motivation and see themselves reflected in a larger mirror than home provides.

Competition and Assessments are not bad things but can be just what your homeschool highschooler needs to stay motivated to learn and grow!

Martial arts are a great way to challenge and grow your son. On that subject Lisa’s son would like to be clear he never trained in Taekwondo. It was a variation of Karate and later Kenpo. Nor has he ever worn a brown belt.

Teamwork Part 4: SMART Goals

SMART goals allow you to manage roles and responsibilities, as well as expectations of yourself and others. Time to learn about SMART Goals for teams!SMART goals allow you to manage roles and responsibilities, as well as expectations of yourself and others. Time to learn about SMART Goals for teams!

Bible Verse: Eph 4:11″And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers.”

Acts 15- AD 55 –James, Peter and Paul and the Council of Jerusalem

Quote: It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit. ! Harry S. Truman

Details of Show:

Refining ones goals means making SMART goals

Specific, Measurable, Attainable. Realistic, Timely

SMART goals allow you to manage roles and responsibilities, as well as expectations of yourself and others.   Without them, conflict will arise more quickly.

Goldilocks Principle – Not too hard, not too easy, just right.

Assessments and feedback loops are important to teams reaching their full potential.

Adjust for those on the team who “drag” the system and realize that often the drag has to do with the bigger story, not just our personal small story.

Lim Facs- Limiting Factors – what disturbances are you likely to run into?

Role Definitions and Hierarchy. Power is a means to the end, not the end and often people get hung up on hierarchy as a power trip rather than as a way to build clearly defined dream teams.

Using Teamwork in your homeschool

Is it Time to Pivot in Your Homeschool?

This week Lisa Nehring shares that pivoting can keep homeschooling fun and exciting by rejuvenating the way you structure the curriculumTis the season to take stock of the year before, dream about the year ahead and realize maybe you’re a bit off track in some areas. It’s a time when we realize some seasons are over and new ones are about to begin.

It’s no different in homeschooling. It’s seasonal. And what may have worked last year, last month or even last week, just might not work for now or for what’s ahead.

Join True North Homeschool Academy Director, Lisa Nehring as she talks about when it might be a good time to pivot, how to pivot and gives you some pro-tips on pivoting, based on her 30 years of homeschooling experience.

So, we learned to do the homeschool Pivot. Pivoting means to shift to a new strategy.

Pivoting can mean big, overarching changes, or small micro changes. It can apply to one kid, or one subject or everybody.

your mission

You can switch up science and keep math, or move to a dynamic online writing

Adding in a fun, mid-year class, like Entrepreneurship can supercharge your entire semester- and who knows, it might literally change your students life!

Make time for life skills, if you haven’t already and spend time cleaning, doing laundry, shopping, budgeting or gardening together.

Bring in an expert for additional learning and support. Having your kids learn from a Ph.D in Science or a native, fluent Spanish teacher can change things from ho-hum to shazam!

True North’s Academic Advising and Performance Series test can help you know where you’re starting from and give you a clear, actionable and affordable plan moving forward.

It’s a New Year and that’s always exciting. And as we begin it, I want to give you permission- if you feel like you need it- to pivot!
