As I sit on my porch, listening to the waterfall and birds chirping I find myself so grateful for friends who are willing to talk about real life and the tough subjects. This week, I had the privilege of chatting with the beautiful Natalie about her son, Jordan. Natalie became the mom of Jordan when he was four and during this podcast she talks honestly about raising a child of color. I am so appreciative of her willingness to be vulnerable enough to tell you her story. If you are raising a child of color or know someone who is, please listen to this podcast. It is our goal to help you raise children who know they are worthy of love and acceptance. Additionally, we want to help you as you navigate the more tender subjects of parenting.
I too, have dealt with some harsh reality as the mother of three Latino boys and a bi-racial daughter. I have been shocked at some of the situations we have dealt with, even from family members. Natalie and I agreed that the key to raising well-adjusted children was the willingness to talk openly about every situation, no matter how difficult. It is important that you start those honest conversations your children are young, so that they will trust coming to you when they are older. Waiting until they are teenagers is too late.
Even though I was only able to parent my little Phoebe Joy for three years, I will treasure what she taught me about love and diversity. I was able to reach out and ask beautiful women of color to teach me how to fix my daughter’s hair and care for her skin. I grew so much as I learned about her culture and the importance of honoring her heritage. I was challenged and angered at the racism I still saw present in our community. I became a fighter for my girl and I watched her change people’s hearts and views with that beautiful spirit and smile
I hope you are willing to tackle the tough questions. I hope you are willing to help your kids treat one another better. Let’s agree to ask more questions instead of assuming we know the answers. Let’s agree to listen. Let’s agree to love.
Have a great week!
