Wild Florida Spotlight: Citrus

Wild Florida Spotlight: Citrus

Podcast #62

“Little Orange Bird, in the sunshine tree, won’t you think of something sunny just for me? Think a funny thought or a sunny word, that will make me happy, Little Orange Bird.” These words to the Orange Bird song, always make me think sunny thoughts and remember the days of my childhood when the Florida citrus industry seemed to jump out at every turn. Back then, we lived in South Florida, and no matter where we traveled, we could be sure that to get there we would pass acres and acres of orange groves, numerous roadside stands selling oranges and grapefruit, and samples of oranges and orange juice were everywhere. Even at the Magic Kingdom, you could visit the Sunshine Tree Terrace and be reminded that you were in Florida, surrounded by beautiful citrus. No matter where you were in Florida, there were hints to Florida citrus. The citrus industry in our Sunshine State is full of interesting twists and turns, much more than we could cover here but I wanted to share just a glimpse of the story of how this golden fruit became so important to Florida.

The Florida Citrus Industry

Throughout history, the fruit of the citrus tree has been held in high importance. Citrus fruit has symbolized good things in many cultures; fruitfulness, happiness, love – in Ancient Greece and Rome it was even considered a primary food for the gods. So, the story of citrus stretches far back in history – well beyond the history of Florida citrus. We are going to talk, however, about the importance of the citrus industry in our beloved state… READ MORE IN THE FLORIDA HISTORY ADVENTURES+ BUNDLES

Reclaim Thanksgiving

Reclaim ThanksgivingReclaim Thanksgiving

Podcast #61

Where did Thanksgiving go? Too often, Thanksgiving gets skipped right over. October 31st – Halloween – November 1st Christmas! Let’s reclaim Thanksgiving and learn about what makes this holiday so special. Take time to enjoy this holiday with your family. Reclaim some of your childhood family traditions. Create some new traditions with your children. Study the story of pilgrims and their journey to America. Don’t miss out on this special time to celebrate family and heritage.

Some Thanksgiving traditions:

Traditional foods.

Of course Thanksgiving today revolves largely around the Thanksgiving Day meal. Traditional foods include turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, lima beans, mashed potatoes, corn and cranberry sauce. Many people serve pie for dessert at the end of the meal. Popular pie flavors are pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, and apple.

The Wishbone.
Some families include breaking the turkey’s wishbone as part of their celebration. The wishbone is found attached to the breast meat in the turkey’s chest. After the meat has been removed and the wishbone has had a chance to become dry and brittle, two people each take one end of the bone, make a wish, and pull. Whoever ends up with the larger part of the bone gets their wish!

After the Meal Traditions

TV – Macy’s Parade, Dog Show

Football, or other outdoor activities

Turkey Trot 5k

Games or puzzles

NAPS!!! Of course, a lot of people enjoy a Thanksgiving nap!

Through this new monthly bundle, FPEA members will have access to Florida History, Science, Geography, and Literature in the form of unique unit studies developed just for you. Each monthly bundle will focus on a topic that has played a significant role in the state we all love and call home, Florida. No two bundles will look exactly alike. Some bundles will include Science unit studies to complement the topic, others may include Geography or Literature, or it may have a little bit of everything. You will also receive special extras like recipes to make at home, craft ideas or great ideas for a field trip to enhance your study.

We thought of another great idea too! We’ll all be working on these same fun unit studies at home, why not make some time to get together and enjoy some adventure with each other? So, we will be hosting some special FPEA Field Trip Days. For these little excursions, you will want to bring along your Road Trip Tracker, which will be included in your first bundle. This will give you a special place to keep track of your Florida excursions.

Get Out the Vote

Get Out the Vote imgGet Out the Vote

Podcast #54

In this podcast, Suzanne and Sharon look at the importance of voting. We look at ways to be more civically involved and why it is important. Get out the Vote! As Florida’s homeschooling association, we recognize the importance of knowing about who our representatives are. Who will be writing and passing future legislation that could impact homeschooling families. It is both important and our responsibility as homeschoolers to vote with an informed education on who is running and what their platform is. Not sure how to become more involved and informed on the candidates? Listen in and learn about some tips and strategies to be more informed.

  • Learn who the candidates are
  • Know their platform
  • Know about their voting history
  • Know where they stand on home education
  • Get involved with a candidates campaign
  • Educate other homeschoolers about the candidate
  • Incorporate civics in your homeschooling studies
  • Involve your students in youth programs

And more importantly – Get out the vote!
