By spending your authority carefully, because a strong-willed child will make you pay for every demand, and you cannot afford to pay for the unimportant ones.
What you are actually dealing with
Strong will is not defiance for its own sake. It is usually a powerful need for agency: to have some say, to understand why, to not be moved around without explanation.
That trait becomes an enormous asset in an adult. The work is shaping it, not breaking it, and the homes that try to break it generally succeed at damage rather than obedience.
Decide what is actually non-negotiable
Make that list short and hold it absolutely. Safety, honesty, how people are treated, and the work getting done.
Then give away everything else, genuinely. The order of subjects, where they sit, whether they write in pencil or pen, which of two books first, morning or afternoon. A child with real authority over the small things fights far less about the large ones.
Offer choices inside the requirement
“Math is happening. Do you want to start with the review or the new lesson?” The requirement is fixed. The path in is theirs. This is not a trick and children are not fooled by it, but it is genuinely different from being ordered.
Explain the reason once
Strong-willed children comply much better with reasons than with authority alone. Give the reason once, plainly, and then do not relitigate it every day.
Do not fight in front of an audience
Public confrontation forces them to defend their position. Most of these conflicts resolve far better quietly and later.
Keep the relationship above the schoolwork
This is the one that matters. You can win a great many daily battles and lose the child. A strong-willed teen who still talks to you is worth more than a perfectly executed curriculum, and you will need that relationship for the parts that are actually important.
