Episode #23 – This week, learn about the many benefits of music education and how to incorporate music into your homeschool, even if you’re not musically inclined.
Including music education in your homeschooling day has numerous benefits for kids of all ages. In a study by the University of Utah, it was found that “learning to play a musical instrument significantly enhances children’s cognitive abilities and academic achievement.”
According to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation, music education facilitates student academic achievement in the following ways:
- Improves recall and retention of verbal information
- Advances math achievement
- Boosts reading and English language arts (ELA) skills
- And Increases average SAT scores
Yet, despite all the great reasons for adding music to the mix, military homeschoolers may find it a bit challenging when they are new to an area after a PCS and are unaware of what’s available locally. Additionally, those parents who aren’t so musically inclined may be reluctant to teach music education.
On this episode, Crystal gives eight ideas for integrating music into your homeschool program.
- Make music part of your daily routine.
- Use music to teach other subjects.
- Encourage your child to sing and dance along with the music.
- Use music to bond with your child.
- Take advantage of free resources.
- Investing in quality music education materials.
- Consider finding an experienced music teacher who gives voice or instrument lessons.
- Getting involved in your local music community.
