Show Notes

Josh is filling out his college application. He is asked to list his leadership positions, as well as any awards, achievements, and honors.

People are Looking for Leaders

Colleges are looking for leaders.

Employers are looking for leaders.

Young people, old people; everyone wants a leader they can trust.

An Unlikely Leader

Tim was a young Christian leader whose Mom was a believer, but father was not. He was sent to a famous Greek city to choose elders for the brand new church there.

He had God’s anointing, but still he struggled with fear.

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. (II Timothy 1:6-8 NASB)

Another Young Leader

Dan was kidnapped from his hometown. He had to start a new life without his parents, temple teachers, or brothers and sisters. He did have some friends who loved God, too.

The place Dan was taken to was horrible, full of sin and idolatry.

Dan refused to compromise. Would this close the door on leadership?

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. (Daniel 1:8 NASB)

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. (Daniel 1: 17 NASB).

What is a Leader anyway?

A leader influences, challenges, and gives direction to his followers. A leader is someone that people follow.

The world is filled with some good leaders and many bad leaders.

In the world, leaders are up on a pedestal.

God’s Kingdom is an upside-down Kingdom. Leaders serve and lay down their lives just like Jesus did.

Leadership is Stewardship

All authority belongs to God

All responsibility belongs to God

He delegates responsibility to people and gives them enough authority to get the job done.

What authority isn’t for …

What authority is for …

What Does a Leader Do?

Leaders teach, instruct, and give advice.

Leaders get a job, task, or project done with a team of people.

Leaders care for people and help them through difficult times.

Leaders inspire and motivate people to do their best, to work hard, to stay loyal.

Leaders set an example for others to follow.

God’s Qualifications for Leadership

God has a plan to build His Kingdom, His Church, spread His glory as the waters cover the sea. There needs to be leaders to mobilize and lead the people.

God’s Qualifications for Men

Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him (I Timothy 3:2-4 NASB).

God’s Qualifications for Women

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children,  to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. (Titus 2:3-5 NASB)

Can Anyone Meet those Qualifications?

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! (Galatians 2:20-21).

How Can you Lead Right Now?

Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. (Luke 16:10)

Faithful in Little; Faithful in Much.

Look for opportunities to serve, to lead in your home, church, job, and community.
