189: Apps for High School Students

Natalie Vaughn, who is newly graduated, shares with us the apps for high school students, she found the most useful.

Listen to the interview I did with her last summer as part of the Techie Teen series where she talked about her job as a virtual assistant.

Natalie helped me write a 10-part blog series on preparing your homeschooled teen for college and shared lots of useful advice based on her own experience.

  1. My Study Life (organization of deadlines, class schedules, etc.)
  2. Duolingo
  3. Anki (an alternative for Quizlet)
  4. Grammarly (spell and grammar check)
  5. Lit Charts (summaries, character breakdowns, outlines, etc. for classic novels)
  6. Easy Bib (can choose from a variety of formats to cite in, can scan barcodes of books to auto-generate a citation)
  7. Khan Academy (video explanations and can organize by class, bookmark videos, etc.)
  8. Mimo (like Duolingo for coding, free version and premium version available)

Teens can learn to use some of these tools and many other applications in FundaFunda’s Computer Applications class

Moving and Creating with Minecraft Earth

Minecraft Earth Review

Episode 101: Moving and Creating with Minecraft Earth

Minecraft Earth is an augmented reality app that could be described as a cross between Minecraft and Pokemon GO. It gets students moving because they have to move to collect resources and it gets them creating as they build their own worlds.

Students can not only build, but can also participate in Adventures and take on Challenges. As they progress through the game they accumulate points and level up. Leveling up as well as completing challenges earns rewards.

Students can take items they collect and can either use them as is or, turn them into something else by selecting the “make stuff” option and completing a recipe.

I have also just played alone, but there is also the option of playing with friends.

The app is free and available in the App Store and Google Play Store

You can find show sponsor, FundaFunda Academy’s online classes and web-based unit studies here.

Parenting Beyond the Rules with Connie Albers

Podcast #68

Connie Albers joins us today to talk about Parenting Beyond the Rules, which happens to be the title of her new book! We discuss the book and more specifically, how to deal with apps and children. What to look for and why it is important to know what your children are doing on the internet and their devices.

About Book:

Parenting teens is one of the most challenging seasons of parenting, isn’t it? While this can be a difficult time of transition for parents and teens, there is hope. You can parent well and build a stronger relationship even through the teen years.

After 30 years of parenting five children and 20 years of working with teens, Connie Albers has witnessed the negative impact of well-intentioned but misguided parenting styles; all focused on managing teens rather than guiding them. But through learning to focus on the hearts of your teens, you can avoid those pitfalls and build relationships that last beyond the transition years as you intentionally learn about, connect with, and listen to your teens. In a world filled with distractions and devices, it is possible to guide their hearts and remain the primary influence in their lives. In Parenting beyond the Rules, you will discover how to raise a teen according to his or her strengths, talents, and personality type, as these things equip teens to manage life.

Join Connie Albers in discovering practical solutions for every parent trying to raise a responsible, godly teenager.
