Teaching Virtue ~ FREE Character Study

A Production of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Without virtue, man can have no happiness in this world.” We sure are seeing this a lot today. Many human beings have lost their moral code and knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong. It is so important to teach virtue to our children, especially in this fallen world.

Virtue isn’t just a character trait. Being a virtuous person takes decision making skills. You choose the right road, or the wrong one. This is something we can teach to our children especially at home.

Once they are out in the world so many things will be thrown at them. It can be hard to make the right decisions when you are surrounded by many that are not making them. If they have had practice making good decisions during their childhood and teen years, most often they will carry that out when they leave your home.

Teaching Virtue

We can teach virtue to our kids by setting the standard and leading by example. They model what they see at home. If you are making wise choices they will want to follow suit. Also, talking openly about why you have made certain decisions and making decisions together as a family helps.

Establishing rules and setting limits at home will help them to make wise choices while still living at home. Why are there limits set on technology, especially the internet?

Talk openly about movie and music choices and the dangers of clicking on the wrong thing and what it can lead to. Why do you have standards and rules on what can and can not be watched at home? What are your reasons for that? Explain these to your kids as you set them.

Doing a character trait study together is a wonderful way to start an open discussion with your family.

Teaching Family Loyalty (FREE Character Planner)

A Production of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Do you long for a family that prays, works, plays together and stays together? Family loyalty is easy to achieve when your children are younger, but what about when they grow up?

What happens when your sweet children who always want to be with you become teenagers? How do you encourage them to stay close and connected to your family? There are so many things going on that pull everyone in different directions. Family time can easily go to the wayside and be missed so quickly.

Family loyalty is one of those essential traits that begins and straightens as a child ages. When your kids begin to be social outside of the home, in church, sports and work friends start to become a priority in their lives. Having friends typically takes a stronger presence and need over the family as your children enter the teen years.

What can you do to teach them to stay committed and faithful to your family?

Loyalty is faithfulness to family and to the commitments, duties, and obligations in our lives. We can teach this character trait by modeling it on our own families. So many important character traits begin right inside your home.

Here are some ways to do this:

  • Create some family traditions that your children will get used to doing and look forward to on a regular basis. Do you take the same type of family vacation each year, or attend a certain sporting or local event? This will be something your kids will get used to doing and look forward to continuing as they are older.
  • Stick to a set family dinner or family game or movie night at least once a week on a set day. Pick one day a week where everyone can commit to work their schedules around needing to be home for that specific set day.
  • Encourage your children to support and encourage each of their siblings. This can be done during weekly get togethers. Help them to build strong relationships with each other so they always have a built in friend to turn to.

Teach your family about loyalty with this month’s free character study printable pack:

FREE Character Counts Justice Planner

A Production of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

I personally look forward to the new Character Counts Planner and character study that Felice creates for us each month.  We tend to use these studies before we start our homeschool day in the morning. We love how there are always a lot of activities that are great for the whole family to work on together.  This month’s character trait is Justice.

There are many in this world today that want everything to be fair and equal, balanced and just. How do we encourage our children to stand up for what is honorable, just and true without giving up their own rights? It sure is something to think long and hard on in this day and age. As we have all seen with the shut down in many areas of our country, there hasn’t been a lot of justice going on. It is important to teach our children to stand up for what is right. Many of our liberties were taken away in the hopes of staying safe during this time.

In the meantime, how can we teach our children about Justice?

Justice can be taught in several different ways. This planner will cover a few different ways to teach justice and honor.

  1. Being just is also being honorable. When you act justly and right, you are acting in an honorable way. Acting just and being called to justice is following through on God’s plans for us.
  2. Being just is loving your enemies and doing unto others as you would have them do unto others. Talking with our children about being just and honorable will show them that being self-centered is not how things work.Teaching our kids how to play fairly, and include others can help them choose right decisions.
  3. Justice also pertains to the law and rules that are set in place for us. You can dig very deep into this while discussing unjust things in the world, and how laws are put into place to protect and bring about justice. There are also many examples in the media today, where justice needs to be served and isn’t. Or where people are fighting to change things and make them better. These are all great things to discuss and talk about with your children.

What’s in this month’s planner?

The Character Counts planner this month will help you to plan out a 4 week study on the character trait of Justice and Honor. It will help you teach and guide your kids on how to learn how to be just, and live a life of honor. As always, it comes with lots of practical applications. The planning is already done for you, which makes it completely open and go. There is always lots of room for personalization and customization for your children and family too.

FREE Character Counts Patience Planner

A Production of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

My family looks forward to the Character Counts Planner and character study each month.  We like to use these studies during our morning time in our homeschool. Family time is so important right now, and there are some great activities in here to do with the whole family! This one is very timely for the season that we are living in and is all about how to practice patience.

character counts: patience character planner text with image of hour glass on a board game.

Learning to practice patience is something that we are all having to do right now. Its not really optional at the moment. We are waiting in line at the grocery stores, waiting for our activities and classes to reopen. We find ourselves waiting for packages to come in the mail that have been delayed. This is a difficult time for our society that is used to all of this instant gratification. How much longer are we going to have to wait for the world to be normal again?

Now is the perfect time to practice patience.

I have noticed that my children are having a very hard time with this as well. They don’t understand why we can’t just run to the store to get a treat, or a favorite food that may not be available. And needing to ration toilet paper in a house with 4 girls? Well, that’s a character quality in itself!

Then there is the waiting for life to be back to our regularly scheduled routine. Just the other day, I was asking my 12 year old why her dance bag was such a mess and exploding all over her room. I told her she needed to clean it out and clean it up. She broke out in tears and said, “Why does it even matter? It’s not like I will be dancing for 86 years!”

86 years! It took everything in me, not to explode in laughter. Instead, I wrapped her up in my arms realizing how difficult this was for her to understand. She dances a few times a week, it is her release, and her passion. The weekly schedule is no longer. I am sure for her it does feel like it has been 86 years! Now is the perfect time to focus on the character trait of Patience, as we don’t really have a choice in the matter. We are all in this together, and we will be working on practicing patience even if we don’t desire to grow in this trait!

What’s in this month’s planner?

The planner this month will help you to plan out a 4 week study on the character trait of patience. Brand New Character Counts Planner: Awareness

A Production of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

We have some exciting things in store for our loyal listeners in this new decade. If you have been signed up as a subscriber with us, you may have noticed something brand new and different this month. Felice has created a new bonus subscriber freebie on character traits. There will be a new character trait theme each month and we are so excited to use these in our homeschool!

Why did we choose the theme of Character to focus on this year?

Well, character qualities are more than just a list of desirable attributes we want our children to have.  Good character opens the doors to good jobs, and the motivation to work hard and to do well. It is not easy to be consistent, however it is so worth it. Good character can be encouraged, practiced and demonstrated on a regular basis in your home. The best part of this character planner is that you can all build stronger character together as a family. It is said that character is caught not taught so there is a big responsibility as parents to demonstrate the character traits we want our children to copy. We all know how our children can very easily imitate our bad behaviors. So, we want to change that and have them imitate good behaviors from now on. That’s the entire goal of this new planner.

Why I am excited to use this new study:

I am personally excited about using this new planner because it will help give me a certain focus for our homeschool each month. Having a specific theme to work on for an entire month will help to solidify that character trait. If I don’t have a plan in place then I usually am not able to complete the extras that I want to do. Especially in a new year, I always have so many ideas of things I want to work on with my kids. One of those has been wanting to do character studies and extra Bible studies with my girls. It’s hard for me to be consistent with this. I know what I want to do, I just don’t know how to implement them successfully.

If the studies aren’t planned out I usually fail to complete them. What I love about this new planner is that all the hard work is done for you. It is literally open and go. It’s a planner for teaching the character trait but all the planning is done for you! So this is planner and a family character study all in one. All you have to do is print it out, read the encouraging introduction and get started. It is so easy and I can’t wait to incorporate it into our daily morning time and family devotions.

Each month we will providing a new Character Counts planner with a new theme to work on for that month. This month’s planner is all about the character quality of Awareness.

Let’s take a look at what’s inside:

  • Character Quality Family Checklist Worksheet
  • 4 Week Study Guide of Awareness
