Special Replay | Best of HIRL Christmas Series: Jesus vs. Santa

A Production of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Does Santa have any place in the celebration of Christmas? If you listen to some homeschoolers talk about it, event the mention of Santa Claus associated with Christmas will land you in the “loner’s corner” of your co-op. Yet, others celebrate good ol’ jolly Santa Claus right next to the baby Jesus. There is also a third category of homeschoolers (like Fletch) who enjoy stirring the pot and cracking off remarks like: “You know…if you rearrange the letters in Santa…it spells S-A-T-A-N.” Fletch can be cheeky that way!

Where does that leave us?

Should we allow Santa to have a seat at the Christmas table or should he and Rudolph be hidden high up on the shelf with that pesky elf?

With sleighbells ringing and all the yuletide they can muster, Fletch and Kendra sit down for an open, honest discussion about the celebration of Christmas and answer the question: What should Christian homeschooling parents do with Santa Claus at Christmas? Tune in and join them for a fun and lively debate on this edition of HomeschoolingIRL.

Why we need power for homeschooling

Jesus’ Resurrection

Appearing to Thomas, Peter, Road to Emmaus

Paul wants to know the power of His Resurrection

“Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body” (Philippians 3:20-21)

It is a quest!

Paul says, “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (Philippians 3:10)

Wait. Why is Paul mentioning resurrection power and suffering in the same passage?

Show Notes

Enemy #1 in the secular world today is the Christian man. He is ridiculed, villainized, canceled. The world tries to change him into a feminized version that is impotent and ineffective.

The World’s Assault on Manhood

  • Be more sensitive, express your feelings
  • Don’t be so aggressive.
  • Don’t be competitive.
  • Be quiet like the girls.
  • Men are missing from families—boys grow up without a dad.
  • Schools/churches are filled with women teachers—again no role model.
  • Society is filled with harmful things to tempt men away from being honorable and holy—porn, anger, divorce, adultery, sexual immorality, drugs, drunkedness, smoking, criminal activity.

Destroy men and you have destroyed our culture.

What is Going On?

  • God loves families. He designed them.
  • Satan hates families. He is out to destroy them.
  • Men lead families so they are the target.
  • God loves local churches. He designed them.
  • Satan hates local churches. He is out to destroy them.
  • Men lead local churches so they are the target.

What Does Godly Manhood Look Like?

  • Leadership.
  • Protective.
  • Noble, honorable.
  • Courageous.
  • Provider
  • Integrity, Honesty.
  • Hard worker.

Exhorting, challenging, urging others to live sold out for God.

What Can Men Do?

  • Dig into the Word.
  • Pray.
  • Get together with other men to grow in the Lord.
  • Overcome strongholds in Christ.
  • Ignore the world.
  • Invest in your sons.
  • Mentor fatherless boys.
  • Be the man God’s called you to be.

What Can Women Do?

  • Stop trying to make boys act like girls and men act like women.
  • Affirm men as leaders. Follow their leadership.
  • Respect and appreciate men.
  • Pray for them to rise up and live like Jesus.
  • Don’t expect your husband to be your girlfriend.

What Can Parents Do?

  • Let boys hunt, fish, and play sports.
  • Give them opportunities to lead and protect.
  • Intentially raise them to be godly men according to God’s Word.
  • Require them to respect you.
  • Be alert for pornography—protect your household.

In “Do We Really Need It?,” Episode, #151, Meredith Curtis reveals the challenges that Christians face as wise consumers trying spend money for the glory of God. “Just do it!” Nike shouts! Do what? you wonder, confused. Advertising slogans dazzle and repel us from billboards to glossy magazine pages, from sides of buses to television commercials to internet ad pop-ups. How do parents, teens, and children combat advertising that leads us in the wrong direction? How can we separate our desires and wants? And our good desires from evil desires? Meredith helps us sort through these murky waters with biblical principles and practical wisdom.

Show Notes

The Power of Advertising

  • Culture heavily influenced by Advertising
  • Advertising dictates how we decorate & celebrate holidays
  • New product promotional ads

How Advertising Works

  • Advertising appeals to both good and evil desires
  • Products will often be linked to a universally desired thing (happy marriage, mate, fast car, admiration, athletic skill)
  • Target certain segments of society
  • Most companies targeting homeschooling families are not homeschoolers themselves
  • Many homeschooling companies targeting Christian homeschooling families are not Christians.
  • Advertising isn’t always honest

How Jesus Responded to Advertising

  • Satan advertised the Kingdom of Darkness to Jesus (see Matthew 4)
  • Satan advertised food while Jesus was fasting and challenged him to test God
  • Finally, Satan offered Jesus wealth and power.
  • Jesus resisted using the Word of God as a weapon of Truth.

Our New Way of Life

  • Imitate Jesus in responding to advertising. Respond to lies with truth. Respond to insinuations with reality.
  • Don’t fall into the trap of having advertising dictate what and when you purchase.
  • Seek God about your needs and desires.
  • Work/talk together as a family to apply truth to advertising and felt needs.
