Mommy Jammies Night – Shirley Solis

“Why You Were Told Being a SuperMom is a Myth and Why They Lied to You”

Join LaToya and her guest Shirley Solis as she talks about "Why You Were Told Being a SuperMom is a Myth and Why They Lied to You!" Moms are often told they are not supermom…as if being a supermom is a myth! Really???!!! You mean it’s not super to not get any sleep through the night and still get up early to feed your family breakfast, do laundry, clean the house, do school with the kids, work, make lunch, make dinner, drive the kids around, keep romance in marriage and still manage to make it out alive? Being a supermom is not a myth…YOU ARE SUPER! And Shirley is going to re-affirm who you already are…and her goal is to finally get you to believe it! Finally…someone who acknowledges who you really are and does not try to make you less than what you are worth!

Shirley Solis is on a family mission, along with her husband of 20 years and their 6 children (ages 18 to 4), to ignite the next generation of powerful families to live with purpose, passion and contribution. Her passions include family, culture and business. These are clearly reflected in her most recent works, which include Building Character with Children (an online training course for parents), her best-selling cookbook Not Just Tacos and her VIP Program for Mompreneurs. If you are ready for transparency, vulnerability and a little Latin flair, then you are gonna love this episode.

Shirley has a parenting webinar that focuses on building character in your children. It’s great stuff!  free videos with some awesome parenting tips (building new habits, teaching your children to do chores and more!)

Mommy Jammies Night – Kim Sorgius

“Parenting in a Broken World: Finding HIM Faithful”

It’s been said that your kids are only as healthy as you are. In a sense, that is true. What will you do with the unthinkable? In a world full of brokenness, heartache and trials, we must find God faithful if we are to survive. It’s what I like to call the “Joseph principle.” The choices we make in the storm will make all the difference: for us and for our children. Come and be encouraged today, as together we bask in HIS love and His promise that we will never be consumed. (Isaiah 43:2)

Kim Sorgius is a passionate homeschooler, mother of 4 sweet kids, and a life-long student. After teaching 8 years in public school, she traded her M.A. in Early Childhood Education for sippy cups and homeschool co-ops. Kim is the author of Not a Statistic: Parenting in a Broken World. These days she can be found writing at Not Consumed and The Homeschool Village, where she daily encourages women to find God faithful in the storms of life.

We’ve all done it – you know, made a bad situation better. We pull out our “Mommy Capes” and race head-long into trouble with a prayer that the Lord will help us figure it out, and quick!

The one incident that comes immediately to mind is the time we planned to go river rafting in North Florida, in early August. The national park was beautiful and we had enjoyed a wonderful weekend of camping. Other than my children getting in trouble for feeding the deer with my delicious fruit salad, the week-end had gone without a hitch. The weather was hot but beautiful under the shade trees and if you wonder – yes, we have air-conditioning in our “pop-up” trailer, a microwave and mini-frig.

This camping trip included my brother and his wife. She wasn’t the camping type but then, I assured her either was I! I knew she would enjoy it if she just gave it a try. Well, that was before the river-rafting trip.

We had just rented our large rafts from what we thought was a reputable place and two minutes down the road my brother’s raft was flat as a pancake atop his SUV. We called to alert him of the fact and we both pulled over to the shoulder. A quick trip back to the seller, with us following, yielded disappointing results. The vendor would not replace the raft nor refund our money. What to do! We had paid cash. The weather at that point looked ominous and the rain clouds were pouring in at an alarming rate. This park was 8 hours from where I lived so a trip back would not happen in the near future. The kids knew this.

I felt the Lord had protected us from being out on the river in a bad storm. I had peace.

My brother and sister-in-law, not so much.

They ranted at the sales person and it was so bad, my husband walked back to our car. I had stayed in the car with the kids and began to lead them in a prayer. For our disappointment, and for this unethical vendor!

We had already packed up our gear, and after the rafting trip we had planned to head home. It appeared our trip home would begin a bit earlier than we planned. I called my brother (whatever would we do without cell phones) and told him it was futile. This wasn’t the type of business you could report to a business bureau! My brother finally convinced his wife to let it go, and we were on the road again. The kids were disappointed, yes we could have continued without my brother but then it was not setting a good example. Family sticks together.

He who pursues righteousness and loyalty Finds life, righteousness and honor. Proverbs 21:21.

I asked my brother to meet us on a particular exit that I knew had soft-serve ice-cream and I alerted the children that a surprise was in store up-ahead. Ice-cream is not an equal substitute for river-rafting, but they saw the benefit. It was nothing as opposed to something! By this time my sister-in-law and brother had calmed down and they realized the storm was heading our way rapidly and we definitely would be drenched if we had ventured out into the river.

Big hugs from my kids and a thank-you made it all better – for me anyway.

This situation is something I’ve wanted to share with others, but the opportunity never came up until now! I’m speaking at the Mommy Jammies Night, with host, LaToya Edwards on February 11 at 9PM. The link will be posted here after the event. For now – visit the Mommy Jammies Night page for details.

How have your turned a bad situation into a good one? Share with us! We all need the encouragement.

Mommy Jammies Night

MommyJammiesNight_144Gifts come in different shapes and sizes and I often marvel at the amazing group of talented people the Lord has brought into my life. It began with my co-author, Jill Whitlock, she and I spent many hours together in the writing of our books, the Creation Science Study Guides. Jill was a homeschool mom and geologist. After completing her homeschool journey she moved to Ft. Lauderdale where she worked for Creation Studies Institute, teaching classes and ghost writing curriculum. Jill met with an unexpected and untimely death in December of 2007. At that time I re-evaluated many things, one was continuing on with something we had planned to do and that is create audio classes to go along with our books, at Media Angels®, Inc.

As we jump in 2014 I am dismayed to see that it has been seven years since Jill died and I only have three classes completed with one left to go, and that is the Creation Geology class. I see many other things that I need to accomplish such as publishing more books, and adding show hosts to this Ultimate Homeschool Radio Network.

I have so many ideas that the Lord has given to me, however I have become sidetracked. Does that ever happen to you? Do you become sidetracked?

In prayer, I’ve asked the Lord to point out ways I can be released of several obligations… and one is the topic I bring to you tonight, Mommy Jammies Night. You see, I LOVE Mommy Jammies – it began as an idea in the mind of my southern, friend Cindy Rushton. She had occasional Mommy Jammies Night – a time to sit back and be blessed by amazing talks and presentations. When I purchased the Ultimate Homeschool Expo from her in 2010, I acquired Mommy Jammies! I couldn’t believe that was the event the Lord wanted me to step away from… so I prayed. And, a name popped into my head of a lady I know, online that I thought would be perfect.

But, I prayed some more. Then, I asked another well placed blogger friend. And, can you guess the name that popped into her head … yes, the same one.

So, I reached out to this person, who (surprise, surprise) said, yes! She is so excited! She attends Mommy Jammies regularly, and once commented, “No one told me to bring tissues to this event.” Yes—many of our speakers touch our hearts, encourage and open our minds to the truth that comes from following Christ. These sessions often lead us to the help and support to take care of our families. These sessions are such a blessing.

Tonight we celebrate one last time of me, as the host my special guest, Carlie Kercheval. Carlie and her husband Michael are hosts of a podcast on this network, as well as authors of a new book, Learning to Speak Life.

I have to admit, stepping down from hosting Mommy Jammies Night is is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do, but I know that the Lord must have some amazing plans for growing Mommy Jammies – did you know there is a Facebook Page? Yes, one I have one and I must admit it is much neglected due to all of my other duties. Please join to chat with the new host!

Mommy Jammies Night will always reside on this Ultimate Homeschool Radio Network, and I’m happy to still be part of the network – as founder, and hosting my own shows. You can be sure I will be at the monthly Mommy Jammies Night sessions! In fact I will be the guest for February 11th!

So who is our new Mommy Jammies Night host? Guess you’ll just have to come tonight and listen to the audio to find out! [Please note: The audio will be uploaded by January 15th for replays]

My gifting is mentorship and I still can with Vintage Homeschool Moms and the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Show where I interview amazing authors and speakers… so, I won’t be far.

Has there ever been anything you’ve given up because you’ve felt led to pursue other things? Please let me know I’m not the only one!

Why are You Here?

We’ve all been made for a purpose, right? But what is that purpose? What if we are very unhappy with that purpose? Let’s face it, sometimes we are discontent. I want to discuss that, but first let’s look at a few questions. These aren’t easy, and for some it takes a lifetime to discern and discover.

First, look around you. Are you happy with your purpose? Do you know why you’ve been created? Do you realize your life purpose?

Why are you hereWhy are you here?

Are you sighing in contentment because everything is going well, or are you frustrated because nothing is going right–at least nothing you’d like to see done today? That is part of the problem. Our expectations are often way beyond what is possible in one day. I know this from experience.

On Monday, for example, I wanted to finish wrapping five presents, go to a local warehouse and buy some essentials, and read four papers my children have waiting for me to evaluate for Literature and History. At noon that day, I was set to host an episode of Vintage Homeschool Moms with two of the show hosts (Carol Topp & Meredith Curtis).

Instead, I had to cancel the show due to a family emergency.

Life happens. Well-laid plans get changed. Reality sets in and we need to adjust.

My youngest grandson caught his hand in a window and was rushed to the hospital. (Miraculously, only stitches and no broken bones–thank you, Jesus!)

Instead of my plans, I had four grandkids at my house all day with lots of energy!

They helped me wrap some presents (you should see them!) and that was the only thing that was on the “list” that was completed that day. I cancelled the radio show (thank you Meredith and Carol for being so understanding) and we baked cookies, played outdoors, and had a blast. We had lunch and cleaned up, did a craft from a free Printable that had a Christmas theme, and watched part of a movie. No radio show. No shopping. No grading papers.

Life happens.

This holiday season, so many things are calling on my attention. These delays remind me that only the Lord is truly in control of my day. By giving it to Him each morning I’m freed from what I have to do and understand that only what He wants to see done will be complete.

Why was I content on Monday? Because I didn’t have time to be discontent. I had so much more to do than was on my list, but then, we all do. We have those things that must get done as well as those we hope to complete. If we wallow in “what could have happened,” that is when discontent sets in. One day at a time!

I am here to serve, however the Lord wants me to serve this day. I am here to be available to my husband, my children, my extended family, or my grandchildren. The Lord has given me talents – and I will use them as I am able and as He directs. However, when I realize my time is HIS time I am freed from obligations and guilt. Stress is often self-imposed and comes from the time to think and worry. Giving my time to the Lord really is freeing!

Why are you here?

Money Saving Mom

Okay I admit it… I’m not good at coupon cutting, finding deals or saving money. In fact when asked by someone at a gathering to pick up the phone and order pizza for the group, I jokingly said, “Sure, if you want it to cost twice as much as you’d normally pay.” She thought I was kidding, but a quick phone call proved I was correct and the pizza she ordered for $7.99 delivered was going to cost me $20.00 plus tip.

I think I’m just missing the discount-saving gene.

But, then I don’t need to have the gene when you have someone like the “Money Saving Mom,” Crystal Paine. I knew Crystal when she was just beginning her blog and loved to hear her heart as she wanted to create a website for moms to save money. I applauded her efforts and was part of a larger yahoo group that she belonged to for self-published, Christian authors. I was always impressed with anyone who could find deals! And, find them she did.

What I love the best about her site is that I don’t need to know about the deals, they come to me and her articles are amazing. Most of the times deal sites can be overwhelming with things flashing and popping up at me so that I can’t make any sense about what I want, or let me rephrase that … what I really need. Not here. The site is well laid out and very easy to navigate. I can quickly locate what I need and be on my way.

Crystal_PaineBest of all, Crystal agreed to speak to all of you, not on money saving mom ideas but from the heart. Her Mommy Jammies Night session has a topic I’m sure we can all relate to at one time or another, “I’d Throw in the Towel If I Could Find a Clean One.” She’ll encourage us as moms! She knows first hand how a busy work-at-home mom, who also homeschools her children can, at times, be so overwhelmed! Yes, even her (and shhhh, even me!).

Restoring balance is what we all strive to attain but if we are honest some days it is just not going to happen! I wish we could all get together for a real life Mommy Jammies Night where we shared our hearts with one another. But, this is the next best thing. Please join us at Mommy Jammies Night and hear Crystal’s talk first-hand.  The session is on November 12, at 9PM EST on our Mommy Jammies Night page. If you miss it the archives will be available here – MommyJammiesNight.com.

Is there something that has worked incredibly well for you in striving to find balance, household chores, or dealing with your children? Please share your great tips with all of us! Or, if there is an area you struggle with, how can we pray for you? I do hope you join us for this and our many live events, and hope to meet you soon!
