Asynchronous Classes

* Not live – but could take different formats
* Self-paced or deadlines?
* Videos + quizzes or more?

How to Modify Online Curriculum for Special Needs Students Part 2

126: How to modify online curriculum for special needs students: Part 2

Guest Lindsay Leiviska explains how to modify online curriculum for special needs students. You can find Lindsay online at A Heart For All Students. Her podcast is also called “A Heart for All Students”.

Be sure to listen to part 1 first if you haven’t already. In that episode she discusses variables to consider when choosing online curriculum.

Tips for what you as a parent can do

  • Rather than leave kids to their own devices, use online curriculum as a teaching tool.
  • Sit with your student and watch videos together.
  • Pause videos at appropriate intervals in order to check for understanding.
  • Use one sheet of paper or small whiteboard for each problem, pause the video and work through each problem together.
  • Depending upon the learning and emotional needs of the child as well as the concepts at hand, I modify my level of involvement.
  • Always remove learning barriers
  • Scribe for your child (write math problems, have them spell orally, etc)
  • Support your child with verbal cues as she works through math problems,
  • Gradually have child tell me the steps involved and “tell me” what to do. This requires A LOT of effort as speaking orally requires greater processing and retention (teaching is highest form of learning)
  • Slowly hand over reigns step by step.
  • Depending upon needs, work through questions one by one together on one sheet of paper for each problem in large text.
  • When needed, support concepts with extra video-based tutorials (Removes mom’s need to choose the correct verbiage)
  • Always have hard copy texts and support tools (maps, reference charts, etc)
  • Resist the urge to stay on schedule
  • Don’t be afraid to pause and repeat lessons or concepts when needed.
  • Circle back to concepts as needed

So many students in high school and college are now learning online, and they don’t always know how to navigate and excel in a different environment to the physical classroom.

As I have been teaching online for many years now, I hope this episode helps those of you with online learners – and those of you who will have online learners in the future.

Here are the tips covered in this episode to help your child from an early age be ready to be a successful online learner.

1. Read instructions / syllabus

2. Be on time

3. Be tech-savvy (screenshot/details if there are issues)

4. Remove distractions

5. Follow rubrics

6. Communicate when problems or confusion

7. Be polite

8. Check grades

9. Don’t plagiarize

94: Online Classes and Costs

When you consider online classes and their costs, you need to remember that you usually get what you pay for.

Free online classes will expect parents to grade and may not be as in-depth as paid classes.

Low-cost online classes are usually self-paced with automatic grading (ie assignments are quizzes) or parent grading. These kinds of classes can afford big sales on their products as most of the work is done during course creation.

The more involvement by teachers the more classes are likely to cost. It takes hours to create a module – whether creating one’s one videos, prepping for live sessions, or gathering online resources. Then a teacher will spend more time if there is a live session involved, and even more time if there is grading to be done. In addition, some subjects (eg languages) will require a lot of teacher involvement. The higher grades are also going to cost more than younger grades.

AP classes and specialized classes usually cost more as teachers need more knowledge for them. There are generally also fewer students in each class.

Episode 48: Web-based Unit Studies

Web-based unit studies are NOT simply pdfs instead of physical books, but rather interactive and accessed through an online classroom.

What are web-based unit studies?

  • mini online self-paced classes
  • make use of online resources eg videos, interactive websites, online games, audio, infographics
  • have online projects where the students use digital tools to show what they have learned

Why include web-based unit studies in your homeschool?

  • unique nature of the resources which can bring subjects alive
  • engaging
  • kids learn techie skills
  • prepares students for online classes at high school and college<

How can you make your own web-based unit studies?

1. You can set everything up on Trello or Google Docs and get your kids to check off assignments as they complete them.

2. Pick a topic (eg.baseball) and search for resources using phrases like “baseball for kids”, “online baseball game”, “baseball infographic”, “baseball interactive”.

3. Search on Youtube and Vimeo for videos. Also, look at Edpuzzle as they have videos with embedded quizzes.

4. Search for “digital breakout baseball”. Learn more about digital breakouts on this episode.

5. Create online games using something like Classtools.

How to select online classes for your children

How to select online classes

Episode 24: How to select online classes for your children

1. Cost

  • you get what you pay for (live classes, graded classes will cost more)
  • refund policies?

2. Synchronous / Asynchronous

Synchronous classes are usually live and students watch a live stream. Good for students who like structure. Example: True North Homeschool Academy.

Asynchronous classes allow students to select the time they come to class and are recorded videos and other assignments. Good for students with unpredictable schedules. Example: show sponsor, FundaFunda Academy.

3. Graded / not graded

For younger students grading is not important, but high school students need a grade. Is the class grade? If not is there an answer key/rubrics for the parent to use?

4. Self-paced vs deadlines

Pros of self-paced classes: take as long as you want, often can re-use for multiple kids, example: – FundaFunda Academy web-based unit studies
Cons – take as long as you want so no pressure to finish, usually not graded

Classes with deadlines ensure students finish their work on time and prepares them for college (and life!). Examples: FundaFunda Academy’sand True North Homeschool Academy‘s full semester classes.

5. Class interaction

Some classes have forums/discussion rooms
Some classes have ways students can view each other’s work and give peer reviews and ratings.
Group work is also a possibility in online classes

6. Learning style

Do your children learn better with live interaction, with textbooks, with interactive websites and games? Do you want classes that have tests or ones that assess mastery in a different way?

7. Rigour

Classes can be “light” or rigorous. Some are Honors level or AP prep.

In conclusion, it can very helpful if you can view a demo of classes you are considering before you buy.
