Map God’s World the Fun Way

In “Mapping God’s World the Fun Way,” Episode, #187, Meredith Curtis shares out-of-the-box creative ways to map God’s amazing world. From using large outline maps and cooking/coloring in to map contests and mapping on the bathroom wall, who says mapping can’t be fun? Get back to basic mapping the world and have a blast!

Fun, Hands-On Ways to Map God’s World

Geography doesn’t have to mean dry worksheets and memorized capitals. Here are some of the creative, hands-on ways to help kids actually remember the world they’re learning:

• Big blank outline maps. Give kids a large blank map and let them fill in countries, rivers, and landforms as you study them across the year.
• Cook your way around the world. Make a simple dish from each country you visit — flavors make places stick.
• Color-code everything. Use colored pencils for continents, climates, or physical features so the map tells a story at a glance.
• Hold a map contest. A little friendly speed-labeling competition turns review into a game.
• Put a giant map on the wall. Even the bathroom wall! When a map is always in view, kids absorb it without trying.
• Build relief maps. Salt dough or play dough makes mountains, valleys, and coastlines something kids can feel.
• Map the journeys of the Bible. Trace Paul’s travels or the Exodus to connect Scripture with the real places it happened.
• Follow a missionary or a news story and find it on the map — suddenly geography matters.

Why Hands-On Geography Sticks

Kids remember what they do. When mapping is active, colorful, and tied to real food, real stories, and real people, locations move from short-term cramming into long-term memory — and it’s genuinely fun, which keeps everyone coming back to the map.

God’s Word tells us that the earth belongs to Him and all the people who live in it (Psalm 24:1) and Jesus told us to make disciples of all nations starting right where we are and moving across the entire world (Matthew 28:19 and Acts 1:8). Best of all, He loves all the people in the entire world so much that He sent Jesus so anyone who believes in Him will have everlasting life! (John 3:16). That’s exciting!

As a homeschool mom, I want to teach my children about the world God made and loves. If God calls them to go to Calcutta to share the Gospel, I want them to know where it is!
