Creation Lab: DIY Osmosis Adventure
An Easy, Faith-Filled Science Lesson Your Kids Can Do Today
Sponsored by the Creation Science Podcast & CTC Math.
Homeschool science can feel intimidating—especially when you’re committed to teaching from a biblical worldview and juggling multiple ages at home. That’s why I’m thrilled to share a brand-new, no-prep experiment that shows God’s intricate design in living plants while captivating every child at the kitchen table.
Welcome to Creation Lab: DIY Osmosis Adventure—a 10-minute setup that produces rainbow-bright results and deep spiritual conversation long after the last celery stalk turns green.
Why Hands-On Creation Science Matters
- Builds Unshakeable Faith
- Real-world evidence of God’s handiwork turns textbook facts into heart-level truth (Romans 1:20).
- Boosts Retention & Curiosity
- Kids remember doing far more than reading alone. Interactive labs cement concepts like capillary action and plant anatomy.
- Multi-Age Friendly
- From first grader to middle-school skeptic, everyone can predict, observe, and discuss the same phenomenon—at their own depth.
What Is Osmosis, Anyway?
Osmosis is the movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high concentration. In plants, specialized tubes called xylem pull water and nutrients from roots up to leaves. When you tint that water with food coloring, the journey becomes a color-popping object lesson your kids will never forget.
Supplies You Already Own
- 3 celery stalks (or white carnations)
- 3 clear jars or glasses
- Red, blue, and yellow food coloring
- Knife & water
Printable Observation Sheet (free download below)
Prep Time: 10 minutes | Active Lesson: 30–45 minutes
Step-By-Step Snapshot
Pour & Tint – Half-fill each jar with water and 5–7 drops of food coloring.
Trim & Place – Cut ½-inch off the base of each stalk and stand one per jar.
Predict – Have kids record starting colors and guesses: Which leaf will change first?
Observe – Check hourly; vibrant veins creep upward like mini fire-works.
Discuss – How does this reveal God’s life-sustaining design? Compare to our own circulatory system.

Faith Connection Corner
Read Psalm 1:3 aloud: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water.”
Just as healthy roots draw water to every leaf, staying connected to Christ nourishes every part of our lives. The colored pathways in the celery visually preach that truth!
Extend the Learning
- Heat vs. Cold: Place an extra stalk in warm water and compare color speed.
- Graph It: Plot distance traveled over time for each dye; older kids calculate rate.
- Connect to Anatomy: Discuss how our veins and God’s plant vessels are both “pipelines” of life.
