What Supreme Court Case?

Cobb v Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Mississippi, a sovereign state, has made a law to keep babies in the womb alive after 15 weeks gestation. The issue before the Court is whether this prohibition on abortion and whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortion are unconstitutional.

Focus of Case

Background including Mississippi law

How this got to the Supreme Court?

What will the Court decide?

Law

Existing law on abortion in the US

Changes

How could this case impact or change abortion law?

State law and potential of changes to Roe v Wade.

Schedule

Scheduled for hearing on December 1, 2021

Expected Decision

Christian Response

Why should I as a Christian care?

What Can I do?

How can I pray?

Intercessors for America  – they have an action resource and a prayer guide folks can have emailed to them if they give their email address.  The prayer guide includes daily calls with each state and the justices they are praying for specifically.  They also give a guide to praying for the clerks and the attorneys.

https://ifapray.org/about/

The ACLJ also has numerous  videos, and articles about this case including the European stand on abortion (protecting life for the most part and NOT recognizing a right to abortion; and also discussing the Biden administration’s continued support of the abortion industry and support of Planned Parenthood.  A great resource on the legal side of things

https://aclj.org/pro-life/

I read this and it’s done by a Christian ministry but I’d never heard of it before. Their page on the development of the fetus is really good.  Can only recommend lightly but it’s useful as a resource to understand where a baby is in development.

If God has called you or your teens to go to college, there are ways to prepare so that you do not fall prey to the darkness, but instead shine your light brightly.

Show Notes

There are several challenges of college life that we don’t hear much about.

Academia’s Worldview

Combination of Marxism and Post-Modernism.

Neither philosophy can co-exist with biblical Christianity so there is a strong attempt to stomp out religious faith.

Worldview Resources

Understanding the Times by David Noebel

I had my teens read it before college and even created a study guide to go with it: Worldview 101: Understand the Times.

Apologetics to Face the Darkness

Study apologetics if you are sending your kids to college.

Have them study apologetics, too.

Apologetic Resources

Here are my favorite apologetics resources

  • More Than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell
  • Cold Case Christianity by J. Warner Wallace
  • Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell
  • Demolishing Strongholds Dvd series from Answers in Genesis

Cancel Culture

While the world of academia, Hollywood, and technology define “justice” and “progress,” anyone who disagrees can be “cancelled.” That could mean fired, unfriended, beaten up, cyber bullying, or suspended. Healthy debate is out; adhering to status quo is in.

Christians can stand firm within a counter-culture if they keep their eyes on Jesus through prayer and Bible study while standing with others who are firm in the faith. If you are going away to college, find a nearby local church and plug in. Find fellow Christians on campus and pray for one another. Stay in the Word of God.

Temptation

Students Face:

  • Sexual Immorality
  • Drunkedness
  • Drugs
  • Smoking
  • Filty Language
  • Depression

Stand firm in your identity in Christ.

Scripture Memorization

Identity in Christ Resources

It is so important to understand who you are in Christ and the basics of Christianity to be confidence in an ever-increasing hostile world. Here are some resources for high school teens that cause them to go deeper in their faith.

Homeschool Socialization

Homeschool Socialization — Homeschool Help Hub | Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network

Finish Well Homeschool Podcast, Podcast #144, Homeschool Socialization, with Meredith Curtis on the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast NetworkHomeschool Socialization

“But what about socialization?” If you homeschool — or you’re even thinking about it — this is the question you’ll hear more than any other. It comes from grandparents, neighbors, the checkout line, and sometimes from that quiet voice of doubt in your own head. The good news: it has a confident, evidence-friendly answer, and once you understand what socialization really is, the worry mostly disappears.

The homeschool socialization myth

The fear behind the question is that a child who learns at home — instead of sitting in a classroom of same-age peers — will grow up isolated, sheltered, or socially awkward. It’s an understandable worry, because most of us picture “school” and “friends” as the same place. But the assumption doesn’t hold up. Being surrounded by twenty-five children born in the same twelve-month window, for six hours a day, is actually a fairly recent and artificial way to grow up. Real life — the world your child is preparing for — is delightfully mixed in age, background, and setting.

What socialization actually means

Socialization isn’t simply being around other kids. It’s learning to live well among other people: to hold a conversation with a toddler and a grandmother, to disagree kindly, to take turns, to help, to lead, to make and keep a friend. Measured that way, homeschooled children often have the advantage, because they spend their days interacting with people of every age instead of only their own grade.

How homeschooled kids actually make friends

One of the biggest surprises for new homeschool families is how full the calendar becomes. Socialization happens naturally through:

  • Co-ops and group classes — weekly gatherings where families learn together, from science labs to writing clubs to park-day play.
  • Church, youth group, and small groups — a built-in, multi-age community many families lean on.
  • Sports, music, theater, and 4-H — homeschoolers play on teams, join orchestras, and take the stage right alongside their peers.
  • Field trips and community events — museums, farms, historical sites, and library programs turn learning into a shared adventure.
  • Volunteering and early jobs — serving and working put kids shoulder-to-shoulder with adults and neighbors of every kind.
  • Neighborhood and multi-age friendships — siblings, cousins, and friends of different ages become a natural social web.

What the research generally finds

Decades of studies on homeschool graduates have consistently pointed the same direction: homeschooled students tend to score at or above their peers on common measures of social, emotional, and psychological development, and they are active, engaged members of their communities as adults. Rather than being sheltered, most simply learn to relate to a wider range of people earlier. The research is reassuring — but honestly, most veteran homeschool parents stopped worrying the first time a stranger commented on how easily their child carried a conversation.

How to answer the socialization question with confidence

You don’t need to be defensive. A warm, short answer usually lands best: “They’re actually with people all the time — co-op, church, sports, and friends of every age. We just get to choose the environments they’re shaped by.” That last part is the heart of it. Homeschooling doesn’t remove socialization; it lets you be intentional about the kind of character and community your child grows up inside.

Socialization at every age and stage

The early years

Little ones learn to share, wait, and play through everyday life — park days, library story times, siblings, and family. Formal “peer time” matters far less than warm, secure relationships at home.

The elementary years

This is prime co-op and activity season. One or two regular group commitments — a co-op, a sport, a club — usually gives elementary kids all the friendship and belonging they crave, without over-scheduling the family.

The middle and high school years

Teens thrive on purpose and peers who share their interests: youth group, competitive teams, theater, dual-enrollment classes, mission trips, and jobs. These years are also when families see the payoff — homeschooled teens are often remarkably comfortable talking with adults and younger kids alike.

History Days

Friday classes was so big, I wanted something more intimate.

“History Days” was born.

Which was better?

Not really sure; both were perfect for us in the season we were in.

  • Online schools
  • Online classes

Lessons Learned

If you are not careful, other people can be the primary influence in your children. Not everyone agrees with my definition of “wholesome” or “Christian”
